SONAR Slinky
NOTE: We’re field testing this lesson. Please share your thoughts on our Feedback page.
Make longitudinal pulses and waves with a Slinky and learn about sound and ultrasonic sensors.
Student Directions
- View the Introduction Video.
- Download and print the Student Activity Sheet.
- Do the activity and begin answering the analysis questions.
- View the Conclusion Video and finish answering the analysis questions.
- View the Crash Science Demo "String Wave" to help review the science concept(s).
Longitudinal (compression) wave: a wave in which the motion of the material (medium) is parallel to the motion of the wave.
Amplitude: for longitudinal waves, is half the difference between the maximum compressions and rarefactions. It is related to a wave’s energy.
Wavelength: the distance between identical parts along a wave
Frequency: the number of waves produced per unit of time
