Not Your Average [Crash Test] Dummy
NOTE: We’re field testing this lesson, which was written by Linda Cronin-Jones, Ph.D. to accompany the “Deep Dive with Dummies” video series. Please share your thoughts on our Feedback page.
This set of crash science and math/statistics lessons accompanies the “Deep Dive with Dummies” video series and explores the role and characteristics of crash test dummies as data collection tools while using dummy size data to address the different ways central tendency can be measured in a data set. It is designed to clarify common misconceptions regarding terms such as average, mean, median, mode, percentile, and percent.
Student Directions
This is a teacher-directed lesson. Please follow your teacher’s instructions to complete this lesson.
Biofidelity: how well the responses of an artificial model accurately replicate the responses of an actual human body in similar situations.
Crash test dummy: a sophisticated, re-usable device that simulates the height, weight, proportions, and major anatomical features of the human body.
Crashworthiness: a measure of how well a vehicle protects occupants from serious injury or death in a crash.
Measure of central tendency: a single value that represents the central point of a data set.
